IHRA Division 1 Bracket FinalsOctober 26, 2008 - Farmington, NC
By Megan Bunch
The 2008 Division 1 bracket finals held at Farmington Dragway started out on Thursday with a gamblers race and a high rollers race to follow. Kelly Swink from Natural Bridge claimed the spotlight with her win over Sumerduck Dragway owner Mike Anderson. In modified Jamie Radford's pocket became a little heavier with his win over Roxboro's Steve Smith. The high rollers race would leave two men from Farmington Dragway to claim victory. It was James Overcash defeating Timbo Belvins. Modified was left to be won by Natural Bridge's Kevin Pollard over Sumerduck Dragway's track champion Kris Bunch. Friday's racing was cancelled due to Mother Nature and lots of rain.
The top competitors from each track came together to compete against each other in the Race of Champions. Farmington Dragway pulled out another win as the well known Tommy Plott claimed victory over Motor Mile Dragways TW Bittinger. (Tommy Plott on left- thanks Candy Blinson for the pic)
Motor Mile Dragway also got to celebrate again as the infamous Chad Harris took the win light from Sumerduck Dragway's Kris Bunch who claimed his second runner-up title for the weekend.
The Main event was held on Sunday and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Spectators and racers gathered in the bleachers to cheer on their team mates in hopes of claiming the number 1 team spot. At the end of the day there could only be 3 winners from each class. Motor Mile Dragway would claim the Junior Dragster class as Chris Tester took out team mate Josh Camp. The modified class was left with Jeff Flood from Farmington Dragway and Todd Austin from Natural Bridge. Which left only one question, could Todd Austin win his second Bracket Finals Victory in a row?!? Not if Jeff Flood had something to say about it. Jeff Flood drove his Vega into the winner's circle over Todd Austin in his firebird. Todd had nothing to be ashamed of as both drivers were 502 on the tree and with Todd running out by .001 at the finish line and Jeff running dead on with a 5.
Leaving one class left to run, Top Et. Sumerduck Dragway would be able to cheer either way as both drivers left were from Sumerduck. Steve Witherow and Brian Mollison were the two left to run. As everyone waited in anticipation the race was over at the starting line as Brian Mollison turned on the red light, leaving Steve Witherow in the winner's circle to celebrate an accomplished victory after years of trying to claim a bracket finals victory. Witherow got to celebrate with friends and family in the winner’s circle and getting a cooler filled with water and ice thrown on him to celebrate his win. The overall team finals was won by the hometown, Farmington Dragway, who filled the winners circle taking their accomplished victory picture!
